Oakley Progression Sessions – Loon Mountain

Oakley’s Progression Sessions hit their last stop this past weekend at Loon Mountain.  Ending where it all started, the Loon group of riders, coaches and staff park ended the four stop all-girls snowboard camp with a bang.  I felt so lucky to be apart of this amazing experience, and thanks to Loon, Jenny Earnshaw, Kirsten Beninato, and the coaches: Mary Walsh, Marie-France Roy, Lauren Perkins, Gretchen Bleiler, Ellery Hollingsworth, Christine Savage, Chanelle Sladics, Silvia Mittermüller, and Kristi Leskinen.

Morning yoga with 80 girls!  They rocked it and we had so much fun.

Head Coach Mary Walsh and her crew of shredders

The park set up was so much fun with the soft snow, and coach Lauren Perkins showing the girls the skills.

With Spring riding conditions, we even had a snowcone machine! ZICO coconut water snowcones anyone?

Oyster shots with Coach Ellery Hollingsworth..love her!

Final dinner with coaches and crew!  Wish that this pictures could have turned out better, but thanks to each and every one of you for such an amazing event.

Cheers to next year!

xoxo

Grocery Shopping: A Peak Inside CA YogaSport’s Kitchen Cabinets

Grocery Shopping with California Yoga Sport

Getting a solid 8 hours of sleep. Pushing your fitness limits & hitting thresholds. Dynamic training schedules. Stretching. Resting. Listening to your body. These are all important factors when training as an performance athlete, however one major part of this balanced equation is nutrition. Unless you have the unique luxury of working solely as a sponsored performance athlete, you most likely run into the dilemma of maintaining a consistent & balanced diet amidst a chaotic work schedule. Whether instructing 4 back-to-back heated core power yoga classes in one day or sitting at a desk from 9-5, it can be a challenge to maintain that athletic mindset when it comes to diet & nutrition even in the workplace. Which leads us to the question.. What are the must-have grocery tips & items for athletes?

That question is not so easy after all. We each have very different tastes in foods & snacks that keep us powered through the day, but we definitely know what works for us! Therefore we decided to take a peak into our own kitchen cupboards to discover what items in our pantry are absolutely necessary for our performance & training. Check out below what we cook up & use daily to keep our bodies fueled!

CYS Tips to Grocery Shopping for Performance

CYS Shopping Cart

1. Stock & buy only what you need for up to 3 days at home. Loading up on fresh healthy fruits and vegetables isn’t just altruistic, it truly does make a difference to your cooking palate & encourages you to eat seasonally! Grab just a few of everything so you don’t waste food if it spoils. Be sure to avoid overly processed foods or any items with preservatives.

2. Keep it colorful. As pictured above in our shopping cart we have a range of colors. Keeping your dishes colorful will ensure that you are getting a mix of many vitamins & minerals which helps your meals stay nutritionally dense. Kale, avocado, bell peppers, and eggplant usually help knock out some of the Roy G. Biv rainbow we were going for.

3. Bring one reusable grocery bag. Keep it eco friendly & bring your own grocery bags. Another plus to this tactic is if you only bring one bag it will help limit your purchases to fewer items. This will encourage you to frequent your grocer more often & will empower you to avoid those bulk & unnecessary purchases of processed or overly packaged foods.

4. Purchase raw & unprocessed foods. Raw nuts, raw unblanched organic almond or peanut butter, Lara bars, and dried fruit are some of our must haves at the store. The whole ‘Rawvolution‘ has some pretty big takeaways as far as diet & nutrition are concerned for athletes & non-athletes alike. In a society full of quick & easy goods prepackaged to our liking the more processed a product has become the less nutrients it contains. Going back to our ancient ways of eating raw food allows our digestive system to naturally process & gain the most from those items such as nuts & vegetables.

5. Add Wheat Grass Drink Powder to the shopping list. This powder is vegan, gluten free, & raw. No excuses not to add this powder into your morning smoothies. Wheat Grass powder provides a natural balanced source of phytonutrients and carotenoids, 2x more dietary fiber than an 8 gram serving of oat bran, 2x more iron than a 30 gram serving of fresh spinach, and an excellent source of folic acid, beta carotene and vitamin C. So much good stuff wrapped up in a powder that can be virtually added to any juice, smoothie, or recipe you choose.

6. Pick up some Apple Cider Vinegar. If our fellow yoga extraordinaire, Kathryn Budig, swears by it and we do too than we had to add it to our list. If your sweet tooth craving is coming on post dinner grab a spoonful of this to help curb the urge for reaching for something sweet. After pounding this stuff it will help to stabilize your blood sugar levels & has also proven benefits to  help with allergies, flu, diabetes, heartburn & high cholesterol.

7. Maca Root. Don’t ask questions, just know that this Incan root will soon be replacing your morning cup of coffee & is the ultimate CYS secret superfood!

Happy Grocery Shopping!

We hope that you find these tips helpful! Feel free to send us your personal favorite grocery items that fuel your body! Always room to add more to this list above!

Creating the Yoga Habit: 7 Steps to Beginning a Regular Practice

Recently I have found myself revisiting one of my favorite blogs for a refresher on how to keep life simple. With January coming to an end & some of my new years resolutions taking a back seat to a busy work schedule it seems as if I have lost the steam I had when the New Year was upon us.

Zen Habits is one of these best blogs that I have found to find ways to improve my personal, professional, & social life through basic understanding of forming, maintaining, & creating new healthy habits. Some of my favorite posts by Leo Babauta are Creating Silence from Chaos, 9 Mindfulness Rituals to Make Your Day Better, & most recently A Compact Guide to Fitness. The last article mentioned has spurred this post as well as Leo’s simple structuring of blog posts has also inspired me to keep this as basic for you as it comes.

Creating the Yoga Habit

1. Plan ahead. Schedule yourself to attend 4-5 classes a week & carve out time in your busy week to stick to it.

2. Make it Social. Have friends join you or meet up at class so that there is a social element to your practice.

3. Pick a studio that is close to work or your home. Having immediate access will increase your likelihood to attend classes regularly.

4. If you are a beginner, we promise it gets better. Day after day, year after year, decade after decade. Your mat will always be there, however it needs you to come to the practice to do the work.

5. Tell yourself you love it. Its all mental, so allow yourself to enjoy the practice or at least trick yourself into thinking that. Soon the pain of the intense stretches & the umpteenth Downward Dog will no longer kill your shoulders. We promise.

6. Give it 3-4 weeks to stick. You will soon realize you can’t live without it.

7. Make it a priority. No backing down or making excuses. Truly devote a month to making this habit stick!

GrindTV Blog’s Interview with Lacey Calvert: Stretch to Shred

Check out GrindTV‘s interview with California Yoga Sport trainer, Lacey Calvert, and learn about how she got into yoga, her inspiration to start athletic training, & where she would want to spend the rest of her days practicing yoga… hint: its somewhere in Central America.

Professional Snowboarder, Shayne Pospisil, in Eagle pose during Lacey's yoga class held at Mimi's Cookie Bar

Here are some snippets of the GrindTV Blog article:

What steps did you take to get to where you are today? How did you get involved with Oakley?

It seems like with all my hard work and by following my heart, everything just keeps falling into place. I started my career post-college as an elementary school teacher and after a few years working in LA Unified, I realized that career path wasn’t for me. I began practicing yoga, and it became my true passion. Then, I had a friend ask me to teach yoga for some pro surfers in HB, and realized that my love for action sports and yoga could turn into a career. Word spread; I got more clients, branched out into snow, football, baseball and BMX.

California Yoga Sport was born after I saw how yoga can benefit these professional athletes. From there, I worked my butt off to get sponsors like Oakley Women and ZICO coconut water. I think when what you do and who you are represents a brand naturally, then opportunities like Oakley Women comes along. The brand represents myself as a female athlete and strong person, with some sweet shades.

What was behind your core idea of yoga specific for action sports athletes?

Because I grew up riding a board on snow and land, I can see how beneficial yoga can be for someone in this career. I make sure that whatever sport my client is involved in, I have tried before. That way I can feel what muscles in the body are used. Yoga allows lengthening and strengthening in the targeted muscles, and overall make you a stronger, better athlete.

What would you suggest to riders that want to get involved with yoga in their local spot? Just get a hold of one of your videos?
Definitely! I am in the process of making more videos to put online for riders to download, and while on the road this is great to keep in shape and cross train. But in the meantime, I suggest everyone to just go out and try all the different styles of yoga there is. Find one that feels good for you, and keep it up.
