Miami Swim Week with ZICO Coconut Water

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim returned to the warm sands of Miami Beach, and I was so excited to be apart of it!!! Jetting off from July 19th-23rd, the event showcased over 25 international designers from Australia, Brazil, Columbia, and the US at what has become the premier swimwear event in the world.
I traveled with ZICO Coconut Water, as they partnered up with Salon Allure for this years’ events.  The weekend was incredible.  Laying by the pools of the W Hotel and Perry South Beach, walking through the booths of the upcoming swimwear in 2013 and seeing the suits being strutted down the aisle at the late night fashion shows were all highlights of the weekend.  Here’s the Salon Allure Show at the W and the Tropicana Pool Party at the Raleigh Hotel:

Even through all the glitz, glamour and bikini-clad models, ZICO was able to set up one of the most inspirational yoga classes of my life.  ZICO & Salon Allure invited parents and patients from The Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, to participate in a yoga class lead by me, on the beach.  Teaching both on the rooftop of the Perry South Beach hotel and on the sand of South Beach was amazing, but the interactions with these children made it even more memorable.  I watched the children take a moment out of hospital visits, blood tests, etc to sit and learn the techniques of breathing and stress-relief.  Afterwards, their smiles and lively hugs brought tears to my eyes.  I saw how much yoga can help these children deal with things in their lives that they can’t control.  They need a space to have to themselves to stop and breathe when things get tough.  I am glad to have this effect on this group of children, and so thankful to ZICO for giving me this opportunity.  Here I am with the group, and Jimmy who suffered from stomach cancer.

Check out the two different set ups for the yoga classes…

THANK YOU ZICO COCONUT WATER! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR MIAMI!

What steps did you take to get to where you are today? How did you get involved with Oakley?

It seems like with all my hard work and by following my heart, everything just keeps falling into place. I started my career post-college as an elementary school teacher and after a few years working in LA Unified, I realized that career path wasn’t for me. I began practicing yoga, and it became my true passion. Then, I had a friend ask me to teach yoga for some pro surfers in HB, and realized that my love for action sports and yoga could turn into a career. Word spread; I got more clients, branched out into snow, football, baseball and BMX.

California Yoga Sport was born after I saw how yoga can benefit these professional athletes. From there, I worked my butt off to get sponsors like Oakley Women and ZICO coconut water. I think when what you do and who you are represents a brand naturally, then opportunities like Oakley Women comes along. The brand represents myself as a female athlete and strong person, with some sweet shades.

What was behind your core idea of yoga specific for action sports athletes?

Because I grew up riding a board on snow and land, I can see how beneficial yoga can be for someone in this career. I make sure that whatever sport my client is involved in, I have tried before. That way I can feel what muscles in the body are used. Yoga allows lengthening and strengthening in the targeted muscles, and overall make you a stronger, better athlete.

What would you suggest to riders that want to get involved with yoga in their local spot? Just get a hold of one of your videos?
Definitely! I am in the process of making more videos to put online for riders to download, and while on the road this is great to keep in shape and cross train. But in the meantime, I suggest everyone to just go out and try all the different styles of yoga there is. Find one that feels good for you, and keep it up.

Hurley’s Brandon Guilmette Talks Surfing and Yoga

   Boys…Surfing…and YOGA?

Even though they are three of our favorite things, we never thought that they’d tie together.  But in the past year, it seems as if the worlds of surf and yoga have combined.  Working with various professional and up-and coming surfers, we were to see them benefit in our hour long customized sessions focusing on upper body strength, balance and conditioning.  We sat in the sand with Hurley’s Brandon Guimette and chatted about his experience with our training regime.

Whats your name, job title and athletic hobby? Brandon Guilmette, Hurley Sports Marketing Manager, Surfing…and pants off dance off!

Dance off?  We’ll need to see that soon.  So, back to reality…how can yoga help you in your surfing career?  Yoga……Well I have found that being flexible and having a strong core and  increased stability help me to be better at what I do.

Why did you find working with California Yoga Sport (Lacey) different from other athletic trainers?  Lacey made our workout fun. She’s a great teacher and can interact with her students rather than just tell them what to do. And she’s better to look at than the guys who train me.

Flattering!  What’s the best advice that you can give surfers who want to try out yoga for the first time? Work through the soreness!

Last but not least, whats your most epic surf story to share? Most epic surf story would have to be the this one time I got barreled.

A many of many words and some great moves on the water and land.  Thanks for you time Brandon and we will be seeing at the Nike US Open of Surf.  Cheers xoxo
